Happy Occupational Therapy Month!

April 30, 2025
April is Occupational Therapy Month, and at The Woods on French Creek, we’re taking time to shine a spotlight on the incredible work our occupational therapists do every single day. Their skill, compassion, and creativity help our residents live fuller, more independent lives—and we couldn’t be more grateful.

Occupational therapy (OT) is a vital part of the care we provide. Whether someone is recovering from surgery, managing the effects of a stroke, or adjusting to life with arthritis, our OTs are there to help residents regain the ability to perform daily activities—safely and confidently.

Here’s how our OT team makes a difference:

Support with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs)

Assist residents in tasks like dressing or grooming. E.g., helping a resident put on compression socks independently.

Enhance Cognitive Function

Provide memory and attention exercises. E.g., using puzzles or memory games to maintain cognitive skills.

Improve Physical Function

Lead therapeutic exercises to increase strength and mobility. E.g., guiding seated leg lifts to support walking ability.

Recommend Adaptive Equipment

Suggest tools to promote independence. E.g., introducing built-up utensils for easier eating.

Promote Independence

Encourage participation in meaningful routines. E.g., helping a resident set up a morning grooming schedule.

Foster Social Engagement

Facilitate group or individual activities. E.g., organizing a craft session for residents with limited hand mobility.

Prevent Falls and Injuries

Train safe transfer and mobility techniques. E.g., teaching proper use of a walker to reduce fall risk.

Support Emotional Well-being

Help residents adapt to life changes. E.g., working with a resident adjusting to decreased mobility.

Develop Individualized Care Plans

Tailor therapy to resident needs and goals. E.g., creating a hand-strengthening program for arthritis.

Educate Families and Staff

Share strategies to support residents effectively. E.g., demonstrating safe wheelchair transfers to caregivers.

Occupational therapists don’t just treat injuries—they restore the moments that matter most. Whether it’s brushing your teeth on your own, writing a letter, or simply pouring a cup of tea, these victories are what OT is all about. To our incredible OT team: thank you for helping our residents do more, feel better, and stay stronger. Happy Occupational Therapy Month from all of us at French Creek!
